The review process

As part of our adherence to the highest standards of professionalism and excellence in publishing at Open University Press we send out all book proposals for review. This review process is a service provided by Open University Press. We consult advisers in your subject area and potential purchasers of the final book for constructive comments on the likely readership, balance of contents and the strengths and weaknesses of competing titles. Although we are always on the lookout for good reviewers, we are fortunate in having a 'stable' of regular advisers who are familiar not only with their markets but also with Open University Press, our list and how we work.

The review process is an essential element of our market research. By canvassing the opinion of the market and those with detailed knowledge of the subject, we are in a position to make an informed judgement about your proposal. The value of the reviews extends beyond the publishing decision. The referees' comments should help you to shape and refine your work. They often provide valuable feedback on written style, level, format and treatment of the subject, all of which helps to improve the quality and sales potential of the final book.
